My take on Malbecs is that most of them aren't smooth,
but rough and jagged, like most of the Pinotage that I have
ever had. But now and then, a Malbec comes along that makes
me smile. This is one example of that.
Another Rio Seco wine made from vines over 100 years old,
this is a very distinguished and dignified Malbec; kind of
like an old South American plantation owner that everyone
calls 'el jefe,' or the boss. The taste is perfectly spiced
and balanced, full of deep red plums, a little
nutmeg/cinnamon, and an oak backbone [which is very
acceptable in a red wine]. There is very low tannins in
this wine, and the fruit taste is phenomenal; you can enjoy
it best by holding a little bit in your mouth for about five
seconds, and then swallowing it.
I won't even begin to say what this wine goes best with,
and what it doesn't go best with, because depending upon
your palate, you might find it great with a number of foods.
