Always looking for something new, I picked up this
Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand yesterday. Now, I've had a
number of wines from this varietal (grape) over the years,
but this one had a strange name, and it is produced by the
Maori people of New Zealand. You know those folks, they are
the proud Polynesian warriors, some of whom have very dark
skin (could be of, if not sometimes assumed to be of,
Black/Negroid ancestry) and have the elaborate tattoos (some
facial). Wesley Snipes had them in the 'Blade' movie
series, and so many other people have sported them as well.
Now back to the wine itself. It sports a very light
straw yellow tint to it, and it's very aromatic, as you get
strong citrus (lemon) and vanilla scents from the nose. The
taste is a standard high acidity along with citrus flavors
that have been smoothed out by a dash a vanilla, and I would
swear 'coconut.' Now, this really surprised me, and I had
to taste it numerous times, but I taste an undercurrent of
coconut, with maybe a little bit of papaya.
This is definitely a wine to be enjoyed, not something to
just slosh down like some regular swill that you can find
anywhere.
