This was my first time having a syrah, as I was not willing
to just go with the flow of everyone in their Yellowtail
Shiraz phase. I am not saying that Yellowtail is not a
good quaff, but I tend to not go with the flow and be a
follower.
Anyway, the wine rep who introduced it to me first started
talking about meats, which made me a little hungry, but
when I took my first sip, the first thing that came to my
mind was roast beast (yes, it didn't matter what beast, but
roast beast dammit). I started thinking about all of the
game meats that I have had over the years, especially bison
and bear (I have yet to try wild boar, but I am ready for
it).
For those trying to find a unique taste, and who do like
their game meats, as well as beef, I would highly recommend
this.
Here is what they say about it on their website:We consider
our Saralee's Vineyard Syrah the 'Grande Dame' of our Syrah
portfolio. Not only is it the first Syrah Arrowood
produced, but it also comes from one of Sonoma
County's 'Grande Dame' vineyards. Saralee's Vineyard,
located in the cool-climate Russian River Valley, has a
reputation for producing some of Californias finest fruit
and with the 2002 Saralee's Vineyard Syrah it's easy to see
why. In fact, Robert Parker calls this one of the greatest
Syrahs that Arrowood has ever produced.
Here's what Mr. Parker had to say about the 2002 Saralee's
Vineyard Syrah - 'Inky/purple-colored, with a glorious
perfume of lilacs intermixed with blackberries, melted
asphalt, and notions of bacon, smoke, and toast, this rich
opulent, voluptuously-textured Syrah exhibits great
ripeness, purity and richness as well as a layered,
multidimensional finish. It should last and evolve for a
decade.'
